The Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence states that "...all men are created equal..." What does this mean, exactly? Some argue that when Thomas Jefferson wrote this line, it is really what he meant, slaves included. Others say that because Jefferson owned slaves, and believed that Africans were inferior to white people, he meant that only all white men are created equal.

Regardless of what it meant in 1776, the 13th Amendment helped move American society towards the concept that all men really are created equal.
