The First Slavery in America
In 1619 the first African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia, to help grow crops such as tobacco and cotton. Slavery was practiced throughout the American colonies in the 1700s and 1800s. The United States banned the slave trade in 1808. Although no more slaves were imported, slaves were still used inside the country's perimeters. Slaves were treated very cruelly while being transported on ships. They were forced to lay in rows, with almost no breathing space.
