Dealing With Slavery Through the Gun
John BrownJohn Brown was born in 1800. He was a radical abolitionist and believed that only violence would free the slaves. In 1859, while trying to arm slaves, John Brown and followers captured an arsenal at Harper's Ferry. Unfortunately, a group of U.S. Marines captured Brown. He was tried and hanged on December 2, 1859, but because of his calm and brave demeanor during his trial, people were praising him in the North within months. His fame lived on in a song.

Dealing With Slavery Through Legislation
Thaddeus StevensThaddeus Stevens was born in 1792. Stevens was a Radical Republican who wanted to abolish slavery with a constitutional amendment and reform the south to protect the former slaves. In 1849 Stevens was elected a U.S. Representative and worked tirelessly with Lincoln to pass the 13th Amendment.
