Thesis
The 13th Amendment states that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime....shall exist within the United States...." Ratified by the states on December 6, 1865, this addition to the U. S. Constitution freed all slaves in the United States. The amendment also lead to the 14th, 15th, and 19th Amendments, which are further black freedoms.
